Vietnam War Letter from Michael G. Lipsius, to his Father

This letter was transcribed and shared by Michael's sister Cynthia.

Michael G. Lipsius served in the US Army in D Troop, 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. He arrived in Vietnam March 12, 1968. He was KIA April 19, 1968 in Quang Tri, Vietnam, just shy of his 20th birthday. His father and mother had divorced and Michael had not seen or spoke with his father for at least 8 years prior to Michael going to Vietnam. Michael was able to track down his father’s address and sent him the following letter:

“Hi,
I guess I’m grown up, but I still don’t know how a son greets his father after not seeing him in so long. All I can say is hi.
I finally got your address through the General services department in Washington.
We (Michael, his mother, and 3 brothers) left for California in 1960. Well, we got to California, San Jose to be exact. That’s just below San Francisco. Kelley’s (his brother) in the Navy now. He’s been in San Diego, Calif for quite a few years. I left home in 1966 after I turned 18. I set up my own apt. and went to school part time (college that is) and I worked nights at Ford in Milpitas. Klint (his brother) has been in the Job Corps for a year, that’s all I know about him.
I went back to the old house on my leave just before coming over here. I was going through the attic and found your teaching credentials and your sports records. Would you believe I was an end -defensive and offensive – in football and I took all Santa Clara City in the discuss and shot put and set the school record in discuss in 1966. I wish I would have had your address when I was back there I would have dropped by. I got a report from a man who worked with you at the yard, that you were in Chicago. I stopped out there, but there were no records.
I’m in the 1st Cav here in Nam. You might have heard about us up at Khe Sahn. We’re getting ready for A Shaw Valley – the valley of no return – where special forces, 101st airborne, and marine units have disappeared. It’s believed to be the last stronghold of the NVA so if our 60 day offensive works the war should be over by the end of the summer.
This country is really something. There are wide stretching valley with rice paddies, small bushes and elephant grass. Their these planes that run right into steep mountains and thick jungle.
I hope I have brought you a little up to date on what’s happened. I’ve got to go back to Maine when I get home to see my buddy and to pick up a bunch of clothes I’ve got to turn in when I get out of the Army. Maybe we could get together then.

Needless to say, my father was so very thrilled to finally hear from his son. He immediately wrote back to him and talk around our house included a lot of “When Michael gets here…”. Michael never got his father’s letter – it had been returned unopened with “KIA” across it.

February 19, 1968; 1st Lt. Vietnam. From the letter……

    Would you believe in April we will have a bathroom (latrine in the Army) with hot and cold running water, showers with porcelain wash basins and honest to goodness flush type toilets. Boy it's getting so nice over here I may not want to come home. (hah!) This improvement relieves my mind of a worry I had. You see I was afraid that when I got home, I would have forgotten that I was supposed to flush the toilet. I have gotten into the habit of doing my business and leaving. Thus, I'll have to get back into the habit of flushing the toilet again but at least it will be over here.
    I suppose right now you are sitting there with a little grin on your face, thinking this subject is kind of funny but not really believing I'm writing about it. Well, you get the idea so I'll continue to something else.
    Do you want to do something? How about stating your plans for R&R. I would like to know what your plans are to include: who is coming to Hawaii, what kind of accommodations do we want, whether you want any money etc. When I find these things out I can send you a list of hotels and other places which might be appealing. You know, you will have to be there at least a day before me so that you can find a place to stay for us. I could possibly make reservations from here but I think it would be easier for you. In the future I'll give you more details so don't think you have to do it all.
    How do you like the picture. This is my hooch in Cam Ranh. Notice the picture of that high school girl I have on the wall. This picture was taken before i got your other picture. Believe me, it's just as small as it looks. My bed is on the right side. Actually in Cam Ranh at least I had a bed. Here in Tuy Hoa all they have are army canvas cots. Well, I can't really say much more about the picture.
    Say, I'm listening to AFVN Radio and I just heard a song. Since I was trying to think of something more than I love you its very appropriate. "My love is higher than the highest mountain deeper than the deepest sea. My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine stronger than the strongest steel- or something like that I forgot. Any way, you get the message don't you? In case you don't turn to the next page.

Thanks for your vow to send two letters a day. I really don't think it is necessary. Although I would like it more if you sent five letters a day. I know that didn't make any sense. I've got a lot on my mind tonight.

We are presently on alert. I have my loaded rifle hanging on the wall just above your picture. I want to keep both of them in view at all times. Charlie has been extremely active today. Don't worry we'll take care of him.

Now for the news. I am leaving Cam Ranh. Your future husband is going out to earn his $65.00 combat pay. 1 Feb. we leave in a convoy for a 150 mile trip to Tuy Hoa. This is the place I was originally assigned. The only change of address will be the APO number. Change it to 96316. Leave everything else the same.

By the time you recieve this letter I'll be comfortably settled in my new home. I'm going to cut this off here. I hope you mind, I've got to go.

By the way, don't expect any letters for about five days. I'll get one off as soon as possible. I love you, and cherish your love.

1st Lt. Tuy Hoa Vietnam War Letter February 4, 1968

   Well, I am just about settled in my new home. I can’t remember when I wrote my last letter. I have done so many things I’ve lost track of time.
   I hope you weren’t worried too much when you didn’t receive a letter from me. I know you didn’t.
   I left Cam Ranh last Thursday morning. We got our convoy moving with 26 vehicles. I was in the last jeep, a gun jeep. I felt just like Rat Patrol. There was a 7.62 mm machine gun mounted on it. Well, anyway, my jeep was the first to break down. I was really scared. There I sat, all by myself in the middle of Charlie country. We finally got it running again and caught up t o the rest of the convoy. A few minutes later another truck broke down. This time the convoy stopped and we waited for an hour and 45 minutes. It was finally decided that we would return to Cam Ranh since we could never make it before dark. On our way back, Charlie decided to play grab-ass with us but some Korean troops in the area took care of them. The next morning we were on the road at dawn. The trip was 120 miles, and you wouldn’t believe the road. I won’t even try to describe it. We were pretty lucky during this trip, no major incidents. We had MP escorts and Helicopter support all the way. Near the end of our journey, we were traveling through some real rough terrain when two bullets hit the road right in front of my jeep. I had no idea where they came from. All I could do was pray., Anyway, the trip proved to be very exciting experience.
   I am now in Tuy Hoa. This place is much different than Cam Ranh. We are in the war here. Our whole perimeter is surrounded by mine fields and our office and quarters are about 100 yards from the South China Sea. As a matter of fact, our perimeter is being harassed by Charlie as I’m writing this letter. This is really an exciting place.
   I sure enjoy my job here which really means a lot. Time should go by fairly fast.
   I haven’t received any mail from anyone for the last week. I sure hope it gets here soon.
   I love you. I think about you all the time.

Marine Captain's Vietnam War Letter April 19, 1968

Tomorrow is a big day up at the bridge as we are to pour 50 cubic yards of concrete. Everything is all arranged and I hope nothing goes wrong. The job is hectic but enjoyable so far. I haven’t been chewed out as yet so I couldn’t be doing too bad a job. The change of jobs makes my tour a little more interesting and breaks the routine. I think I will be ordering a 1969 Buick instead of a 1968 as long as the prices are comparable. Anson had the best deal of all so maybe he will get the order. Big day tomorrow. Time for bed.

I’ve looked all over Chu Tai for a Father’s Day card and there just isn’t one to be found. So I’ll just say HAPPY FATHER’S DAY Until next year. Had a real bad day today so I won’t even describe it. Now I can’t even find a pen that writes. Only 127 days to go some people are getting up to a 20 day cut on their rotation date. I’ll just keep plugging along until then. Any more news on the 20% discount on the car?

Happy Ho Chi Minh’s birthday! Chu Tai is poised and waiting fro some kind of an attack. I spent today holding 2 summary Court Martials on hill 10 and one on hill 63. Went up by chopper this morning and had my driver come up and get me to drive me back. I’m real tired tonight. Should clean house but imagine I’ll go to bed. Only 146 days left to go. Glad you got my slides OK. I’m almost done with another roll. Temperature was up to 105 today and is 89 right now. Feels cool. The heat has left me with no appetite. Weigh only 144 pounds now. You’ll have to fatten me up in October.

Another busy day. Tomorrow we should get the first span of steel beams placed//// It’s now 13, May 1968 1235. I got as far as “placed” and we had a red alert as rockets came raining in on the airfield. Lasted until after midnight so I didn’t finish the card. Thins are coming along moderately well. The company is beginning to take shape. Still plenty busy. Only 152 more days at the most and I’ll be back in the states. Time will pass.

Have you seen the Grants lately or have they moved down to the cottage for the summer? Hope all is well. Time for bed.

Not much news tonight. Chu Tai is quiet and has been for about 3 weeks now. I think Al and his straight 12% discount sounds like the best deal. At least it sounds the most sure. Would hate to expect 20% and have the car arrive and find out it wasn’t true. Would be kind of late to order from someone else too. Only another month or so and it will be time to place the order. Time for shower and bed.

US Marines Chu Tai Area Vietnam War Letter 1968

Action is picking up I the Chu Tai area again. Four nights ago the air strip got rocketed. Two nights ago an “A” company patrol got hit twice within ½ mile of here. Last night a service company patrol saw 3 enemy and shot at them. This afternoon a jeep driving out by the rifle range got ambushed in broad daylight only ¼ mile from here. The only person hurt so far was one man from my company on the patrol two nights ago. He was taken out by chopper. I gave him his purple heart yesterday. Other than this everything is normal.

Have a question on my new Ran Sport. So a Hurst shifter standard equipment with a 4 on the floor transmission? Also does it have a wide ratio and close ratio option? I know Oldsmobile comes standard with the Hurst shifter and has the wide and close ratio option. I wondered if Buick has the same. Had a long day today and feel dragged out tonight. Guess bed is the best place for me. Hope all is still well at home. Only 106 more days to go. I’ll send a tape this weekend. Still quiet here.

Two nights ago we were mortared again her in 9th Engineers Compound. Took 21 rounds of 82MM mortar, same as last time. No casualties this time however as only 2 of the 21 rounds landed inside the berm. They were way across the other side of the comp9ound from “A” Company, but it still was no fun running from my quarters down to the company area. Hope all is well at home, at least quiet. Hoss is getting to be quite a horse! Wish you could send me a picture of her and the rest of you. Guess I’ll go to bed early.

   This letter is going to be as short as the page since this is all I have.
   I received your surprise today along with two letters you wrote on the 29th. Needless to say I was extremely surprised. Where did you get those tapes? I can’t believe it. It’s great. I will have many hours of listening pleasure.
   I want to tell you that you put me in a very apprehensive mood today, with your letter. You said that you had a problem since you haven’t’ started yet. All I can say is that I hope everything turns out alright. I’ll also say that no matter what happens. I’ll be with you. If everything is alright when you receive this letter you can laugh at me, OK? Anyway, I wouldn’t change a thing what happened in the past.
   About that double wedding, I’m very flexible with these matters, but to tell you the truth. I don’t want to share the moment that you and I get married with anyone else. I guess that is being extremely selfish, isn’t it?
   Well, as I said I am very flexible. Please find out for me, what the general feeling is. I try to please as many people as possible.
   Tomorrow and Sunday are very big days her at Tuy Hoa. We officially open our club. There is going to be a two day celebration. Great times, huh?
   In the remaining space. I would just like to situate a few things. Thank you again honey for those tapes. I really appreciate them.
   I hope everything turns out well for you, especially since we are so far apart. I can’t bear the thought of you enduring hardships alone. Especially those brought ton by me.

   Today is Sunday, the second day of our club opening. The club is beautiful and quite a success. There’s only one problem. Everybody seemed so happy and I felt so depressed. This may sound kind of thick but I can’t rally be happy without you. I want to share all my happiness with only you and no one else.
   I’m sitting here in my room listening to one of the tapes you sent. It’s great listening music. This one is Roger Williams. I want to thank you again.
   I was happy to hear that you started your job, and that you thought you would be happy with it. By the way, where is Spiegel’s?
   This is really a short letter so short it’s almost not a letter. Actually, I could say everything in just 3 words, at least everything that is worth anything. I love you.
   Well, good night from Vietnam. I’ll write again tomorrow.

Hey, don’t feel depressed. Only 155 days to go. I’m writing this in response to your last letter where yo mentioned you were somewhat depressed.

Last night I didn’t get a chance to write since we had a practice alert. At 6:30 PM I went into the club to wait for the alert to start at 7:30. I had a couple of beers then I had a couple more and after that a couple more. I realized I was getting a little woozy and wondered when the alert would be called. At that time I was notified that the alert was over so I had a couple more beers. Well, to make a long story short I wasn’t notified of the alert and drank so much beer I was glad when I got to bed. Not a very good excuse for not writing is it?

I was told today that I may get a change of job. My roommate and I may take over the company as Company Commander and Executive Officer. I really hope this comes through. Keep you fingers crossed.

Today was a bad day. The mail man forgot to deliver the mail. Actually, the mail plane didn’t arrive, no one got a letter. Very bad for the morale. Maybe tomorrow.

I hope everything is going well for you. How are the two mothers acting? I have these pictures in my mind of both of them screwing around doing things which aren’t too important.

I want to be extremely serious now. Relax and take a deep breath. Ready? After thoroughly thinking about our relationship. I have come to the conclusion that it lacks. For me it lacks you, and for you it lacks me.

Please say hello to everyone for me. Even if I don’t write much, I still remember them once in a while. Well, goodnight.

   I received a letter form your mother (my future mother in law). I’ve never seen paper that size. It looked like a catalog. She told me that if ever a marriage was made in heaven, it was this on. I thought that described it perfectly.
   One other thing she mentioned which I tend to agree with is; you and I would be better off if we made mo9re decisions and stood by them. I realize that this is very difficult due to the distance between us, but let’s try. Whenever anything comes up don’t think it’s to small to bother me with. OK?
   Ooops! Well, I’m back it’s about 15 minutes later now. Somebody just fired a couple of shots in our direction from the village. Tonight could be exciting. I should tape the noises which are being made right now. Don’t’ be worried there isn’t really much to worry about.
   Well, by the time you get this letter I will probably have received one from you with your plans for R and R so I won’t ask you what they are.

    I’m really something. I worry and get depressed and so forth when I don’t get any mail. Then I turn around and fail to write for two days. I’ve been plagued with that “hate to write” feeling lately. Now I feel bad and I’m trying to make up for my failure by writing to you while I’m at work.
   I was planning to write again the other night while I was Officer of the Guard, but the night got a little exciting, and I didn’t have time.
   Sunday, I slept all day and in the evening watched the show at the club. (It wasn’t very good) Yesterday, even though it was Labor Day, I had to work. I should say, I had to be in the office. I was planning to write to you last night but I played a game of chess which lasted longer than expected. I was so tired when the game ended, I went straight to bed.
   Don’t worry about me giving you any static concerning the wedding preparations. I’m with you all the way. I do, however like to hear about the things your doing.
   Tomorrow, I have to take a trip into Charlie country to another unit. I’m a witness for a Court Martial case concerning Marijuana. I don’t really relish the idea of making the trip but I guess it’s all in the line of duty. Anyway, I have to earn my $65.00 a month somehow.
   How can you stand to watch those Sox games? They seem to have a knack of losing. I guess you are what they call a “real” fan. I would probably be right in there rooting for them too, if I was able to follow the games.
   Speaking of sport, have you seen the result of the Green Bay exhibition games? I sure home they do better during the season. They play Sep. 15 in Green Bay, against Philadelphia.
   Well, I’m going to put this letter in the mail box now in hopes it will get out this afternoon. I love you and miss you.

I’m going to start this letter by saying that it will be extremely short. I was glad to hear that you made it home safely. I was also happy to receive a letter from you. In case you didn’t know. I miss you.
   I took a trip into Tuy Hoa today just to waste time. My job is still the same as it was when I left. Do nothing for ten hours a day. I am getting rather disgusted with the whole thing. I’ll stop, you don’t want to hear my complaining. I will say however that no matter how bad things get, all I have to do is close my eyes and think of you. You are the greatest morale booster there is.
   Our house girl brought a pineapple for us today. It was really good but didn’t quite match the quality of Dole. The Vietnamese think it’s funny that the Americans like fruit which they grow in the back yard.
    About your job, don’t worry about making a whole lot of money. Just get one you will be happy with OK?
   Well, I’m down to the end of the page and I must go to bed. I’ll write again tomorrow. I think about you always.

I would enjoy getting a tape from them. Temperature today hit 104 at noon. Plenty hot! Still can’t get over the size of Hossie! Has Sally definitely taken a job as a waitress this summer? Also any more word on the 69 Buick? Only 2 more months and it will be time to place the order. Time is going. Guess I’ll go to bed early tonight.

I am dieing to receive our surprise. I wish you hadn’t said anything to me.
   Today I received a letter from Bill and one from Wally. Wally sent me a picture of his daughter. She looks just like him. Bill told me that he talked to you the other day. I’ll bet that conversation was interesting.
   Today being Sunday, I stayed in bed all day. This wasn’t really because it was Sunday but because yesterday was Saturday and last night was Saturday night. We had a party to celebrate the completion of our new club. All the booze was free. Wow! Next weekend we will have a two day grand opening. You should see the club. It is fancier than a lot of nice restaurants around Chicago. In other words, it’s really nice.
   Today was also payday and guess what? I forgot all about it. I didn’t get paid. Now I’ll have to go to Finance tomorrow. Smart, aren’t I?
   Well, that’ about all I have for now so much happens here, I have a hard time remembering everything. Oh yes, we can say good bye to another month. Hooray!

Nothing unusual has happened today. I hope we can get through the night with nothing unusual. Saw a goofy movie over at the club tonight called “Ski Party”. It was a Walt Disney production. We all went over to watch it because of all the round eyed girls in it. Seems funny to have a bunch of grown men jammed into a small club to watch a teeny-bop movie. It’s about time for bed now. I received your letter of 28 July today. In it you asked about the honeymoon. If it is alright will you, Jamaica will be the place. The length I figure will be a week to 10 days. You also asked about stopping in New York. That sounds like a splendid idea. We can make arrangements and reservations at the same time we arrange our honeymoon (I should say “I’ll arrange” if it suits you) If you want to do this. I can make arrangements to attend a couple of interviews while we are there, thus taking care of business with pleasure, OK?
   I bought something for you today. I don’t know if you will like it but it’s yours. I’ll send it with the flag as soon as I get a container. The gift is some Vietnamese silk pajamas. They don’t come in sizes so I took the largest size. I hope they fit but I have my doubts. (a lot of them) I’m not trying to be funny it’s just that these Vietnamese women don’t get any larger than a 10 year old American girl. Anyway, the silk is nice.
   Today was another hot one, yow hot. I’m really looking forward to winter. However, I’ll probably be hotter in December than I am now. I might as well say it since I’m on the subject, I love you. What else did you expect me to day? Boy, what an incoherent paragraph that was.
   Well only 147 days left. A drop in the bucket compared to the time we will be together.
   In case you are wondering, we haven’t had any trouble with the VC lately. I hope it stays that way.
   Want to hear a gross story? You don’t have to read the following if you don’t want to. Today the infantry found 3 VC bodies outside our perimeter, they were killed last night in an ambush. Well, after each man in the ten man squad relieved themselves on the bodies, they notified a recovery crew. That’s just one little story from behind the scenes.

I expect to have the last minute complication which we always have, but we always seem to have, but we always seem to come out OK in the end. Things go along as usual. My First Sergeant rotates in 2 weeks which could leave me in a bind unless I get another one in. I got your 2 booklets on bridge. Thank you very much.    Sorry that I didn’t ‘write to you last night as I said I would. I felt extremely tired last night and decided to go to bed, early. As it turned out, I’m glad I did since for the send night in a row we were attacked. They dragged us out of bed at 3:30 AM. The little battle lasted until 6:00 AM so I wasn’t able to go back to bed. The VC try but they haven’t succeeded in doing much damage yet. I hope it stays that way.
   I feel extremely far from you today. With the hours I’ve been keeping, the little night attacks we get and the fact that I still haven’t received any mail, all add to what seems to be a big dream. I hope that some day I can wake up and you will be in my arms.
   The weather is starting to get warmer now. I suppose in a fe weeks it will be unbearably hot. Not really. I think I can bear almost anything as long as you are in my dreams.
   Well, how is everything your way? I would probably have more to say if the mail ever got here but since it hasn’t I can’t really correspond with you.
   Flash-- 130 days until R and R. Say that reminds me. I can be very flexible with my request for R and R. Why don’t you let me know which week after the middle of June will best suit you, OK?

I've been fighting a bug the last 2 days and have been sleeping most of the time. I feel better tonight and with a good night sleep should be back up to par tomorrow. We just had a red alert at 1800 tonight as old Charlie got a little too brave and tried to rocket the airfield during daylight. They spotted him just 600-700 meters outside our lines and hit him with Huey gunships. Quite a show! Even saw the VC running. Hope for a quiet night so I can sleep.

Got your airlines schedule and it looks like good non-stop service from both LA and Frisco to Boston. Shouldn’t have much problem getting home the same day I land in the states. Things still quiet here, Hope they stay that way for 58 more days. Only 2 more platoons to move and my company will all be out of Chu Tai. About time for bed,

   You are amazing or should I say unbelievable. I received 122 letters and one package today. I haven't’ opened the package yet. I haven’t had time. All these valentines, thanks a lot. You are wonderful. I’ll have to get busy and write more often to make up for the letters I got today.
   Tonight I am officer of the Guard. Sounds exciting doesn’t it? It means I get to stay up all night and make sure Charlie doesn’t get inside our perimeter. I hope everything stays quiet.
   I know I have told you before, I really like my job up here at my new home Time sure goes by much faster than it did at Cam Ranh.
   Guess what I have decided to quit that terrible habit- smoking (at least try.) I’m afraid I’m going to get fat if I quit though. Are you still smoking? I think you said once that you were gong to quit. Didn’t you:?
   Well I have to go out into the night and check the guards. I’ll sign off now.

   Greetings from the war. The longer I am here the more I wonder why. I probably shouldn’t say that but that’s the way I feel. I’m here because I’m and American and proud of it. I think the U.S. has got itself into one hell of a situation. The average person over here doesn’t know anything about politics, elections, freedom etc. They have been farmers and they will continue to be farmers no matter what happens. I think that we have mad a mess of things here since we have changed these people’s lives so much all they care about is money. We have brought these people out of there “dark ages” way of living in one giant step. I think this will really have an affect on them. The U.S. can’t stay here much longer and it’s impossible to leave. Well so much for the way I feel. The fact still remains that I am an American and I will do what my President directs. OK?
   So you heard the news of our little battle here. I don’t usually get involved with these skirmishes. This particular one was about 5 miles from here. Anytime I get involved is when we have some harassment type attacks on our perimeter. All in all, I’m pretty safe.
   Would you believe that I have 270 some days left and I want to go home? Well I do. Today for some reason I really missed you. You were on my mind continuously all day. I found it hared to work. That’s no exaggeration.
   Sorry no pictures today. I’m going to make special effort to take some more one of these days.

   I’m sorry to hear that neither of my parents will be able to accompany you to Hawaii.
   I have some bad news for you. I have tried on two occasions to get a call through but the station can’t seem to pick up the U.S. I thought I better tell you this so you don’t get to upset if you don’t’ get a call. I’ll continue to try. Keep your fingers crossed.
   To change the subject, here is a little sorry about a confused bus driver. The Hotel Astor hired a new bus driver and instructed him to meet all trains at the Pennsylvania Station and announce in a loud voice, “Free bus to the Hotel Astor”. Enroute to the station he kept repeating to himself, free bus to the Hotel Astor. Upon arrival of the first train, he became confused and suddenly yelled, “free ass at the Hotel Buster, I mean free Hotel at the bust your Astor, I mean bust your ass at the Hotel Freezer. I mean freeze your ass at the Hotel Bastard, Free hotel ass buster, I mean kiss my ass you bastard and take the street car, I quit. I hope you enjoyed that. I got a kick out of it.
   Please don’t forget to bring my sprortcoat, tie, and American Express Credit Card. OK?
   I sure wish I could be at your graduation. Even halfway around the world I feel extremely proud of you. Here is a kiss for being so wonderful. X
   I am extremely aware of the fact that I have written a whole page and part of another one.

While doing some research, I stumbled upon a list of the Missing in Action from Vietnam. The thing that struck me as I looked at the names, and how they died, is that I don't think that the US as a country did them, or their families justice in remembering them. We still see some POW MIA flags around, but that just doesn't seem like enough. So, to honor them, I am going to list their names here (1 at a time) as I find time, until I get all 2,489 of them. And to all those who served in Vietnam....Thank You. I'm sorry you didn't get the welcome home you deserved. *Note some of the remains of those listed here have been recovered*
