Notes: Staff Sergeant Ayers was a member of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. On March 19, 1970, he was Killed in Action by small arms fire while fighting in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. Dr. Bill Peters, 1St Lt, USMC, in his book titled "First Force Recon Company - Sunrise at Midnight", served his entire Vietnam tour with Sgt. Ayers. He further dedicated his book to him, with the quotation "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13". Sgt, Ayers was a Marine's Marine.
